Repair and Maintenance of Gates at Damsite – Sunkoshi Hydropower Station (SHPS)

Repair and Maintenance of Gates at Damsite – Sunkoshi Hydropower Station (SHPS)

This project involved the comprehensive repair and maintenance of dam gates at the Sunkoshi Hydropower Station (SHPS), a key river-based hydropower facility in Nepal. The objective was to restore full operational integrity of the spillway gate system by addressing structural wear, water leakage, surface corrosion, and mechanical inefficiencies caused by years of exposure to high-pressure flow and environmental conditions.

Key Components & Scope of Work

Concrete Rehabilitation Using M40+ High-Strength Concrete:

  • Supplied, mixed, and placed M40-grade concrete at the spillway chute and gate zones to restore structural stability and withstand hydraulic forces.

Stainless Steel (SS) Plate Supply & Installation:

  • Installed corrosion-resistant SS plates in gate base areas to reinforce structural edges and minimize wear from water turbulence and gate movement.

Application of 2-Component Epoxy Resin Bonding Agent:

  • Applied a high-adhesion two-component epoxy bonding primer for surface preparation—ensuring optimal adhesion between concrete surfaces and additional overlays or components.

Three-Component Epoxy Bedding Mortar:

  • Supplied and installed epoxy resin bedding mortar (Resin:Hardener:Filler) beneath mechanical elements to ensure precision-level fitting and long-term durability.

Supply & Delivery of Specialized Rubber Seals:

  • Installed multiple types of rubber seals tailored to the dam gate system:
    • Flat-type Rubber Seals

    • Z-type Rubber Seals

    • Musical-type Rubber Seals : These high-performance rubber seals ensure watertight gate closure and prevent leakage during operation.

Protective Epoxy Coating for Moist Metal Surfaces:

  • Painted exposed metal gate surfaces with a 2-component wear-resistant epoxy paint achieving 200µm minimum dry film thickness (DFT). This coating was designed to perform under wet and abrasive environmental conditions.

Project Impact

This work significantly improved gate performance, water-tightness, and corrosion resistance, ensuring safer and more efficient dam operation. The integration of high-strength concrete, precision sealing systems, and industrial epoxy protection reflects our commitment to delivering high-performance solutions for Nepal’s hydropower infrastructure.
