Middle Bhotekoshi Hydroelectric Station – Dam and Weir Surface Rehabilitation

Middle Bhotekoshi Hydroelectric Station – Dam and Weir Surface Rehabilitation

This project involved the structural rehabilitation of the dam and weir surfaces at the Middle Bhotekoshi Hydroelectric Station—a high-capacity, run-of-river hydropower project critical to Nepal's energy grid. The work aimed to restore surface integrity, improve durability, and ensure long-term resilience of water-retaining structures exposed to high-velocity flow and sediment abrasion.

Highlight: M80 & M60 Grade High-Performance Concrete Systems

A key technical success of this project was the placement of M60-grade high-strength concrete and the application of M80-grade thixotropic mortar for extreme wear resistance. These materials were chosen for their exceptional strength, durability, and bonding performance, vital for long-term reliability in harsh hydraulic conditions.

Scope of Work

Supply, Mixing & Placement of M60+ Grade Concrete:

  • Used advanced admixture systems to deliver high-performance M60-grade concrete in key structural sections. This ensured high compressive strength, reduced permeability, and robust performance under load and flow stress.

Supply & Application of M80-Grade Fibre-Reinforced Mortar (Mapegrout T80):

  • Delivered and applied chloride-resistant, fibre-reinforced, thixotropic mortar designed for high wear areas. This M80-grade solution offers exceptional resistance to erosion, impact, and chemical exposure—ideal for hydraulic structures like weirs and dam spillways.

Two-Component Epoxy Bonding Primer:

  • Supplied and applied a high-adhesion two-component epoxy primer to prepare concrete and repair surfaces for proper bonding before mortar and overlay applications.

Three-Component Epoxy Mortar Application:

  • Applied a high-performance three-component epoxy mortar (Resin:Hardener:Filler) to repair and reinforce damaged concrete sections, providing outstanding mechanical strength and moisture resistance.

Why This Project Was Unique

This rehabilitation project pushed the boundaries of hydraulic surface repair technology in Nepal, combining M60 and M80-grade concrete solutions, fiber-reinforced thixotropic mortar, and advanced epoxy bonding systems to deliver unparalleled durability. The materials and methods used aligned with international standards for long-life hydropower infrastructure.
